The Rise and Fall of Joaquin Phoenix

Posted on 22nd January 2009 by Adele in News

After a successful career in Hollywood, Joaquin Phoenix decided to retire from movies altogether and start a career in music.  His many roles have included Max California in 8mm, Commodus in Gladiator, Johnny Cash in Walk The Line, Merrill Hess in Signs and Lucius Hunt in The Village all of which he has work alongside some of the greatest actors which he ha now left behind him.

His switch into music came as a bit of a shock to us all at the time but last year, after working with Tim Burgess of The Charlatans, Tim stated that the album Phoenix was recording was brilliant.

With that in mind we are asking why on earth has he decided to go into rap music?  Although not one of my favourite genres of music, I have nothing against rap and respect the artists who do it well.  But you wouldn’t put Phoenix down as a rapper.  Phoenix did make a comment on this:

“This is me saying this is who I am. This is my story.  After all the years of reading scripts and reading lines, this is my chance to do something straight from the heart and put it out there.

“When I was young I liked punk rock music but then I discovered rap. I love the storytelling aspect of hip-hop. Are there people out there who think I’m a joke? I’m sure there will be. Are there people who think it’s going to suck? Probably, but I can’t worry about that.”

But, after a recent performance at a Las Vegas nightclub, lets just say audiences were a little gob smacked when he performed 3 songs and then proceeded to walk of stage an then fell off altogether! Just in case you don’t believe me, here’s a little video for you!
