Rocky Horror Remake - Can It Be True?
After recent news that Sky Movies and MTV are collaborating to remake the ‘classic’ rock musical, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, that has spawned millions of fans, it appears that the creator, Richard O’Brien, is to have no part in it.
Originally recorded in 1975, starring Susan Sarandon, Meatloaf and of course, the magnificent Tim Curry as Frankenfurter, it appears that Richard O’Brien has not given his blessing to the reinvention of his masterpiece and is to have no input into the film.
O’Brien, in a recent interview with the BBC, stated,
“I have no view on whether it should be remade but it doesn’t have my blessing. I’m not co-producing it and I won’t be involved in any way.”
“The first I heard about it was when people sent me cuttings from US papers.”
In a further interview with BBC Radio 5Live, he was understandable concerned about the new version.
“I don’t know where they’ll go with it really, I’ve even heard that they’re going to put new songs in. I wrote the book, the music and the lyrics.”
“Where are they going to get the songs from? Who’s going to do that? That’s a bit strange isn’t it?”
I think we can all be in agreement when I say, nothing can compare to the original. We all love the songs, the characters and the story and I don’t think anything will compare, no matter who they have cast.
One fan on the official fan club site said,
“Well ‘Zilla, all I can say is that when I saw the little blurb about this in the Philadelphia Inquirer last week, I felt like I’d been kicked in the solar plexus and I was depressed the rest of the evening. I felt like, if this happens, if there’s even a shred of truth to it, that something precious is going to be taken away from me. Me and millions of others, but I can only speak for myself. One of the responses I read in empireonline says it all: nooooooooooooo!”
