Guitar Hero Metallica PS3 Game Review

Posted on 16th July 2009 by Daniel Higginbotham in Other

I maybe should have done this review when the game first came out, but I’ve been busy playing it over the past few weeks.

I am a big Metallica fan, and after buying my PS3 only a month or so ago, I hadn’t played a PS3 version of Guitar Hero before – but had all the other versions on my PS2 including the full World Tour Band set.

There are numerous compatibility charts now available on the internet to find out what games are compatible with which versions and which instruments work on what, etc. That was my first concern, as no way was I gonna buy another set of drums and microphone. I was pleasantly surprised to find that all I needed to buy was a PS3 wireless guitar and I was away.

On to the game itself… the format should be familiar by now, with no real changes or additions to the game modes. The core rhythm based gameplay remains the same. The graphics are obviously better than the PS2 but are nothing ground breaking (and there is no need to be). The main draw is the songs; 28 of the 49 tracks are from Metallica, so if you are a fan of the band there should be enough to keep you going for a while. The career mode is cool and you can unlock exclusive Metallica content including videos and trivia.

I think this version is better than World Tour as this band were made for this game. When you play Metallica tracks you feel that you are actually involved with the band and the guitar solos are genuinely uplifting. Maybe the franchise is releasing more versions of the game than we really need, but in my view, this is the best game in the series: a metal lover’s paradise.
