Nickelback won three top awards for Best Video, Best Post-Production and MuchLOUD Best Rock Video at the MMVAs held in Toronto, Canada last Sunday night. The Vancouver rock band also went out with a big bang and lots of explosions after performing the last song of the evening.
Nickelback are currently in the middle of their North American tour - after their successful UK leg of the tour as discussed in a previous post - with 35 dates still to go, which will end in Houston, Texas on 12th September. They are being supported by Hinder, Papa Roach and Saving Abel.

Recent news surrounding Green Day has generally centred on two topics.
Firstly, Green Day are set to debut a musical based on the concept album American Idiot in September. Even the band themselves including Billie Joe admitted to the New York Times it “doesn’t make a lot of sense”. I can’t really disagree with that admission really. A musical based on this year’s 21st Century Breakdown would make more sense – with the more varied and developed storylines. However, for Green Day fans like myself it would certainly make for an interesting night out. The American Idiot musical will premiere on September 4th at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California, US and will run until October 11th.

The Who are one of the greatest rock bands of all time so it’s only right I update on some recent news featuring the band.
Firstly, their 1965 classic “My Generation” is among the 25 songs selected to join the US National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress this year. This is a great honour as songs must be over 10 years old and culturally or historically significant to even be considered for preservation into the special archive. The track recordings are nominated by the public and a panel of experts on the National Recording Preservation Board.

I was watching Detroit Rock City again the other night - you know, the one with the four young metalheads trying to get to a KISS concert in Detroit, which is set in the 1970s. The 1999 film may have been an ‘American Pie’ style road movie but it did have its moments.
Well, I wondered what KISS were up to these days and so Googled them – I was interested to find out that the band seem to have patched up their differences and are now looking to release a new album.
The album will be produced by Paul Stanley and the band is currently on their 35th anniversary tour, which include concerts in Europe for the first time since 1999.
Canadian rockers Anvil had spent many years in commercial obscurity (they were formed 30 years ago) until a certain documentary propelled them into the limelight last year. Now they will be supporting AC/DC!
I mentioned in one of my Top 3 Rock Movies blog posts recently that a work colleague had strongly recommended I watch Anvil! The Story of Anvil when it came out on DVD. As a lover of films, and rock music, the documentary (which is supposed to be very funny) really appealed to me – so much so I have actually pre-ordered it (out on Blu-ray and DVD on 15th June)!

After much debate in previous blog posts there is finally some news on the release of Pearl Jam’s self released album – I even got taken in by a bootleg CD advertised!
Ever since Pearl Jam announced they had terminated their 18-year association with Sony there have been many rumours as to the album’s release. Some thought the album would arrive unannounced.

Ok, so it’s actually two movies rather than one, but I’m making the rules here. The idea first started as a recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live in the US. Wayne’s World first became known to viewers in the UK through 10minute episodes on BBC2, which were in fact extractions from the SNL show. That is how I first came across Wayne’s World.

I never did get to see this 1984 ‘documentary’ about the fictitious British rock band Spinal Tap first time around – I was only six when it was released. This one of the reasons why this is No.2 rather than at the top spot.
I happened to stumble upon the film a few years ago, after seeing a clip while playing Scene It the interactive board game. The clip on the game was of course the amp that goes ‘up to eleven’ scene.

We start off with a coming-of-age tale that despite winning an Oscar for the Screenplay it still did not seem to make too much of a stir when it came out in 2000 and even now I feel that it is somewhat underrated.
The film saw top class performances from Kate Hudson and Frances McDormand who were both nominated for supporting role Oscars.

When considering my three top movies which include some aspect of rock music as part of its appeal, I admit I am looking at this completely subjectively. Some films are considered universally as ‘classics’ or artistic films, but the criterion I’m using for these three films is purely the ones I have seen and which I enjoyed. Therefore, I do not include ‘The Doors’ or The Who’s ‘Quadrophenia’ which I have not seen yet. The latest rockumentary, ‘Anvil! The Story Of Anvil’ from last year looks good but again, I have not seen it. And I haven’t included Metallica’s ‘Some Kind Of Monster’ as I also consider that purely a documentary.
