Foo Fighters to return to the studio

Posted on 9th March 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in Album Release, News

The band may have taken a break over the last year, with Dave Grohl providing the beats as a drummer for Them Crooked Vultures, Foo Fighter fans needn’t worry. The successful rockers are now ready to return with new material.

Grohl explained at the Independent Spirit Awards that the band’s 7th album in 16 years is already in the pipeline. This is great news for FF fans everywhere.

A number of demos are already underway and the new album is expected to be very loud!

Grohl admitted, “I think this could be our heaviest album yet.”

The album release date is yet to be announced but it is looking like it could be September at the moment. Watch this space for further details…

Flight of the Conchords return to where it all began

Posted on 4th March 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in Tour Dates

The New Zealand comedy duo first made an impression back in 2003 by receiving a nomination for the Perrier Comedy Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The BBC radio series then followed before they became an instant hit with viewers who enjoyed their unique blend of comedy and music performances on the HBO show.

We discussed the possibility of the Kiwi duo returning to the UK, where it all started for them, in a FOTC blog post published back in April last year - now the time has finally arrived with the announcement of a series of UK show dates to be held in May. The Flight of the Conchords will be performing live again with dates in Birmingham, Manchester, London and Glasgow.

Be sure to get your tickets when they go on sale tomorrow morning and see what all the fuss is about when it comes to their reputation for putting on excellent live shows.

What do you think of this year’s V Festival line-up so far?

Posted on 4th March 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in Festival Review

The V Festival has always offered a strange commercial blend to its music line-ups over the years. While Leeds/Reading and T in the Park have largely (apart from this year at T, surprisingly enough) focused on a core of rock and indie acts, V has always been made up of a diverse mix of artists.

For once, this commercially-orientated festival seems to have more indie acts than T in the Park. Apart from Muse, Kasabian and Stereophonics, the artists at T include rappers Jay-Z, Dizzee Rascal and Eminem. At the V Festival it may still have pop artists like Cheryl Cole and Paolo Nutini, but it also boasts Kasabian and Stereophonics as well as Kings Of Leon, Paul Weller, Skunk Anansie, The Charlatans, Editors and Shed 7.

The event, taking place between the two sites in Chelmsford and Staffordshire between 21st and 22nd August is still devoid of hard rock acts, but for indie music this seems like a viable option…

That is unless you are going to see AC/DC, Them Crooked Vultures and Deftones at Download!

Will we be ditching CDs for good?

Posted on 2nd March 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in Other

The rise in accessibility and cheaper prices of MP3s available online has led to the surge in sales and a downward trend for CDs. So, is this the end for this medium or will we always want a physical reminder of our purchase?

As many people still collect old vinyl records, I’m sure there are those who would argue it is always better to have something to show for your music purchase. Personally, I do agree with this view to some extent as I still like to have CDs in my collection. However, I still buy some MP3 purchases online, all the same.

The main advantages of buying MP3 files online is they are easily downloaded into your music playlists and can be accessed right away - you don’t have to wait for the CD top be delivered or have to go out and buy it.

In conclusion, I still think there is a place for CDs, especially when released by my favourite rock bands but, occasionally, when I just want to hear a certain track, I prefer to download it and have it instantly. Therefore, I try to get the best of both worlds.

Free RATM London gig tickets snapped up in super quick time

Posted on 17th February 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in News, Tour Dates

If you were one of the lucky ones who managed to get Rage Against The Machine tickets this morning, then well done!

It has been announced that all tickets for the surprise event, which is a reward to fans who helped the band to get to the Christmas Number One slot, had been allocated by 1.30pm.

The date for the gig is set for June 6th and will take place in Finsbury Park in London. Fans could register for tickets at Theragefactor.co.uk but unfortunately they have all gone.

Also, it is best to be aware not to buy tickets from touts or auction sites as all tickets will be issued with photos.

The annoying thing about rock music cover songs

Posted on 17th February 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in Other

One of the things that really infuriates me - and shows my age too, I guess - is when a cover version of a perfectly good classic rock track is released and all the kids immediately refer to the latest song as the definitive track.

A good example of this for me is when Joe McElderry sang a version of Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey on the X Factor. Okay, he didn’t release it officially as such - mainly because Journey wouldn’t let him - but he still made most people I spoke to think of the song as his own.

I did like Metallica’s version of Whisky in the Jar, however, so it goes to show that it is not always bad - just when the song is covered by a pop star or band!

Nickel (back) or Pickle?

Posted on 16th February 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in News, Other

Are you one of those who are angry about the continued success of Canadian rockers Nickelback, or are you one of its many fans across the globe ready to stick up for the much maligned band?

If they haven’t done anything else, the band have certainly gained coverage for dividing opinion amongst rock fans everywhere. Their legion of fans can’t get enough of them while their detractors hate the very mention of their name alongside the term ‘rock’.

The Facebook group set up to prove that there are many in both camps has gained almost one million members. The protest group against the music churned out by the soft rockers is called ‘Can this pickle get more fans than Nickleback?’

Well, it may not have more fans on Facebook than the band just yet (913,000 to Nickelback’s 1.4million), but it is certainly closing the gap…

Green Day’s American Idiot hits Broadway next month

Posted on 15th February 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in News, Tour Dates

Green Day fresh from their Grammy Award success of 21st Century Breakdown are to bring their American Idiot musical experience to Broadway starting March 24th, 2010.

As an avid Green Day fan I really want to see the Michael Mayer rock show that has received rave reviews since it opened in California last year. Now it is moving to New York there is more of a chance UK fans can go and see it, especially with cheaper flights to the East Coast of the US than the West.

Tickets are on sale now and you can get them from the official Green Day website.

Mojo is new music mag leader

Posted on 12th February 2010 by Daniel Higginbotham in News

The classic rock magazine Mojo has now topped the list for the most sold music magazine, having beaten its rival and sister title Q. Other such as NME, Metal Hammer and Kerrang! have noticed a drop in sales over the past year.

Uncut was in third place while Classic Rock followed closely behind. This just goes to show that there is still a clamour for rock-based music mags and rock music is still going strong into 2010.

There are many great festivals to look forward to this summer such as Download. If you are going to any festivals this year let us know which one you are looking forward to the most.

Rock Festival Clean ups

Posted on 7th December 2009 by Daniel Higginbotham in Other

This may seem like an unusual topic at first for a rock blog, but there have been many festivals down the years that have produced some major carnage. At most major concerts and festivals it requires a huge clean up and rubbish removal operation at the end of the night or weekend. However, there are certain events that go beyond the usual paper cups and remains of fires after the festivals have ended. Here are just a few:

Glastonbury

Every year this festival leaves the farm in a right state but back in 2008, 140,000 revellers left it looking like a rubbish tip. There was not as much rain this year and ticket sales were lower following the announcement that rapper Jay-Z would be headlining.

Bonnaroo Festival

The clean-up operation after this year’s Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee, US, turned up the dead body of a male in his mid-20s (though no foul play was suspected)! As well as this extraordinary find, there were discarded mobile phones and lots of shoes!

Woodstock

Back in 1969 this legendary hippie festival produced mounds and mounds of litter-filled ground. The clean-up operation was epic and many festival-goers stayed behind to help with the carnage left behind.
